Louise Newell - Coordinator

Louise has many years of experience, both working and volunteering, with groups at the community level. She has worked as the Coordinator of the FRC and the previous Literacy Centre for the past three years. With a strong sense of community and family, Louise likes to dedicate time to the three organizations she volunteers with and spend time with her husband, Felix and their black lab, Rielly, at their home in Charleston.

Maidena Welsh - Program Facilitator

Maidena has been working and volunteering with young children for the past 20 years. She lives in Come By Chance, where she grew up, with her husband, Roger, and two children, Brendan and Bethany. Maidena has done Early Childhood Education through the College of the North Atlantic Distance Program and has owned and operated her own preschool/playgroup for 14 years. Maidena enjoys spending time with her family, gardening and trying to keep up with her two grown children.


Arlene Strong - Program Facilitator

Arlene resides in the community of Musgravetown where she grew up.  She has volunteered in her community for the past 13 years with children and various groups. Arlene enjoys camping, attending Drop In and Play, and other activities with her two boys, Mason and Spencer.

Rita Barron - Program Facilitator

Rita lives in Shoal Harbour with her husband and son, Christien.  She completed Early Childhood Education at the Early Childhood Training Centre in St. John’s, specializing in Children with Special Needs, and worked in this field for a number of years before returning to her hometown of Southport. Rita began working for the Family Resource Centre in July, 2007; however, she’s been involved with children and families for a number of years, volunteering for both parent and
community groups. Rita divides her time between her two children, Christien and Kerri, and her greatest hobby, photography.

Gwen Hiscock - Resource Mother/Program Facilitator

Gwen grew up in St. John's, but resides in Clarenville. She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Memorial University (Political Science, Canadian Studies). She brings with her a background in community development and working with women and families. Since moving to the community, she has been involved with various volunteer groups and enjoys facilitating Lifeguard and Water Safety Instructor courses. She likes to spend time with her husband, Craig, and their son,
Garrett, and daughter, Emma.

Bernice Dyke - Administrative Officer

Bernice has many years experience working in an office environment at both the clerical and accounting level.  Working at the Family Resource Centre is a natural fit for her, with her interest in community development and love of children. Bernice lives in Bloomfield with her husband, Wes, and their black Lab, Bailey.  Her greatest pleasure in life is spending time with her grandchildren, Emma and Abby.  In her spare time, she enjoys reading and spending time at the cabin.
